Brainbombs - The Grinder/Mommy Said 7"

Brainbombs are filthy, filthy band. For almost 25 years, these men from Hudiksvall, Sweden have created some of most vulgar, crude & obscene harsh noise/dirge/rock n' roll ever heard. Normally i would compare Brainbombs to similiar bands, but, the problem is, there is no one who even comes close to this sound. There have been a lot of imitation bands sprouting up the last couple years, but there is only one Brainbombs. Their lyrics alone have confused, surprised & maybe midly offended friends who I've played their albums for. My personal favorites from Brainbombs are Obey & Urge to Kill (the latter producing my favorite song title of all time, "Ass Fucking Murder"), so hunt those two down if you like what you hear from this release.

This 7 inch is part of a series of singles released from 1999 to 2007 that were later released on on a self-titled LP in 2008. These two songs are actually pretty rock 'n roll for a Brainbombs release, but are nonetheless noisy, raw, and after it's done, you're honestly wanting more. Njuta av, tycka om!

Unsane - Peel Sessions

Unsane is easily, EASILY, one of my favorite bands. Heavy and loud as hell without necessarily being a "metal" band, their style is so simple, but there is NO band that can sound as unique as Unsane does. They took an indefinite hiatus after their 2007 masterpiece Visqueen, and Chris Spencer
is currently in Celan, collaborating with members of Einsturzende Neubauten and Oxbow (Which is something i will bring up in a later post, their debut album is easily my favorite record of 2009 thus far).

This is Unsane's Peel Sessions recording, which was recorded over the course of 1991 and 1992. Charlie Ondras, Unsane's original drummer, plays on the first two tracks, but after his death in June of '92, he was replaced by Vinnie Signorelli of Swans and Foetus, who completed the sessions and continued to play with Unsane for the rest of their tenure as an active band.

This is essential music. It's loud and punishing in the best way possible.

Tracklist:

1. Organ Donor/Street Sweeper/Junge Music/Exterminator
2. Bath
3. Broke
4. Body Bomb
5. Hill
6. Black Book (Vol. II)

Conifer- Conifer

Portland, Maine's Conifer very successfully combine 1970's proggy kraut-rock and modern sludge metal. The band has flown under the radar the last 7 years of their existence, but they are just as good or better then most of the modern mainstream sludge/post-metal bands that get much more press. This is what one would expect to hear in the cold forests of the upper Northeast.

This is their 2004 debut originally released on Not Common Records, but re-released by Important & Trademark.

Buy their new, or rather, in-print material here.

Burmese - Men

This record is a nasty, thick mess, and i was so excited the first time I heard it.

San Francisco's Burmese are a band that formed in 1998, and are very much a band i'm extremely surprised aren't much more well known. This EP was recorded in 2004 in Oakland by Weasel Walter (who would later join the band in 2007), and is extremely visceral in a way not aesthetically different from Today is the Day or Unsane. The band sites their influences "WhiteHouse, Brutal Truth, Burzum, Swans, & Landed", and a mash of all those acts is a very good description of their harsh noise/grind/sludge.

You can purchese Burmese here.

Black Sabbath - The Peel Sessions

In April of 1970, John Peel recorded Black Sabbath.

Tracklist:
1. Black Sabbath
2. Fairies Wear Boots
3. Walpurgis
(Which is an early version of War Pigs, so the lyrics are different.
So that means you can't sing along.)
4. Behind the Wall of Sleep

So basically, you have the greatest radio DJ of all time recording the greatest band of all time.

ENJOY

it's returned!

Steak & Black Onions is offically back in business. I've been extremely busy the last year or so, and since all the older links were mostly dead anyways, i thought i'd start completely fresh. So slap on your rocket boots.

The Body - Self Titled LP

The Body is a 2-piece stoner/noise outfit from Providence. James over at Lethe Sounds posted their Cop Killer/Dead Cops 7", as well as their split with Get Killed. I have their full-length, so i thought i'd throw it up here. I listened to this a couple times yesterday, and i forgot how much i like this album. It's kind of got a Burning Witch meets Grey Daturas thing going for it. Do it!
